The Majura Primary School Modernisation Project team recently attended a School Board meeting and a P&C meeting to share the confirmed project scope and outline the next steps for the school modernisation.
The Project Team provided an overview of upcoming milestones and what our school community can expect throughout the project. Parents and carers engaged both in person and online, raising thoughtful questions about the scope, budget and future planning for the school.
The project team acknowledged the community’s interest in the modernisation and reaffirmed their commitment to providing regular updates as planning and construction progress.
The team will return in term 2 to continue the conversation and share further information.

The process to engage with Majura Primary School’s community to hear your priorities for the school’s modernisation has concluded.
The ACT Government will communicate the project scope to the school community in the first quarter of 2026.
A Listening Report is available, [ to ‘Majura Primary Modernisation_Consolidated Listening Report] detailing the feedback received during the in-person and online conversations, and in writing. You can also read the independent facilitator’s report [‘Majura Primary – listening report_Communication] and a summary of the written feedback [‘Majura Primary Modernisation – Summary of written submissions ] received.
Our school community identified a range of modernisation priorities (listed in no particular order):
- Ensuring quality learning facilities:
- Flexible and accessible learning spaces that can be altered to suit learning needs, with emphasis on addressing current concerns around accessibility and overcrowding.
- A larger library (suggestions to either move it to the current hall or having separate junior and senior libraries).
- New and improved specialist learning spaces.
- Building maintenance and upgrades: upgrades to current school facilities including heating and cooling, bathroom facilities, sustainable building design, and removal of hazardous materials.
- Hall and assembly space: upgrades to the school hall so that it can accommodate the entire student population and cater to a broader range of activities.
- Outdoor and play-spaces: upgrades to playgrounds, courts, and green spaces.
- Staff support and wellbeing: improved meeting rooms, administrative offices, and a dedicated sick bay.
These priorities will now be considered by the ACT Government and inform Government decision making on the project scope.
In the first quarter of 2026, Infrastructure Canberra, together with the Education Directorate, will let the community know what the modernisation project will deliver.
The engagement process for our school’s modernisation wrapped up recently, with the most important group saved for last! On 8 September, a conversation with around 20 year 3–5 students took place in the library.
The creative and insightful group shared their ideas, talked about how they currently use our outdoor spaces, and provided insights into opportunities for our indoor learning spaces.
While a few fun suggestions worked their way in – giant trampoline park in the hall, anyone? – a lot of the students’ hopes for the future of their school lined up well with similar themes heard in other engagements.
All of the feedback collected during the consultation will now be brought together in a Listening Report, which will be published early next term.
Today, 23 September, Infrastructure Canberra and the Education Directorate are meeting with the School Board, Principal and P&C convenor to consider the range of modernisation priorities identified through the consultation.
Thank you to everyone who has been involved so far, we look forward to keeping you updated on the next steps of this exciting project.

Work is progressing on the expansion and modernisation of Majura Primary School. The project is currently in the design phase.
Planning for the design has included scoping infrastructure that is safe and accessible for all students and will improve the provision of inclusive education programs. Considerations have been made around flexible classroom spaces, small group learning areas and quiet rooms.
The design has considered the most functional shape and form of buildings that meet the Education Directorate’s operational and functional requirements.
The architects, Education Directorate and Major Projects Canberra are currently reviewing the project’s preferred design option.
There are two major build components within the design. These are:
- A new double story learning community
- A new hall/gym.
We are pleased to announce that the Education Directorate has engaged GHD as the lead architect and consultant team for the Majura Primary School expansion. GHD will manage the engineering, master-planning and design of this important expansion project.
GHD have been provided with introductory site information, commenced site investigations, and have commenced workshops with Majura Primary School representatives.
The project
The ACT Government is committed to providing every family with access to a great local public school.
Enrolment forecasting indicates enrolment growth in the inner north region – in particular on the eastern side of Northbourne Avene – is expected to continue and therefore investment in additional permanent primary school capacity is required.
As a result, Majura Primary School will be expanded and modernised, following the $39.3 million investment in the 2022-23 ACT Budget.
This investment will deliver a larger and modernised school for our students and staff, by increasing the school capacity by up to 300 places. Works will include building new school facilities and upgrading existing identified school facilities.
The Education Directorate is currently undertaking master-planning and detailed design for the modernisation and permanent expansion of the school.
We will continue to provide updates on the Majura Primary School expansion and modernisation project here on this webpage when they become available.
