Health and Physical Education

Introduction:

Physical Education

The Health and Physical Education programs are Majura is based on the Australian Curriculum which aims to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to enable students to advocate for their own and others’ health and wellbeing. Physical Education is supported by grant funded clinics, extracurricular sports days and our annual swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals. Majura has a close working relationship with School Sports ACT, which provides opportunities for students to represent the region or state in their chosen sport. Events such as Jump Rope for Heart and Weetbix active bands are regular fixtures on our calendar.

We have a Wellbeing team of staff at Majura Primary school whose work is based on Friendly Schools Plus and incorporates resources that align with this framework. Students access age appropriate resources in the form of big books, picture books aligned to SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) along with Smiling Mind, Khan Academy and ClickView.

Belief statement:

Physical Education

At Majura, we believe that Health and Physical Education is a vital aspect of all students' schooling. Our early years focus heavily on developing gross motor skills while the upper primary focuses on the fundamental motor skills. Majura has a strong focus on supporting students to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills they require to make healthy, safe and active choices that will enhance their own and others’ health and wellbeing.

“At Majura, we believe in developing the social and emotional learning skills and wellbeing of all our students. It is essential to all aspects of life to develop self-awareness, self-control and sound interpersonal skills. We teach skills which enable students to regulate their emotions, develop their resilience and their understanding of self-efficacy. We believe these skills should be taught and in an engaging, meaningful and varying way.”
